Installation Guide

Since Stifle is in alpha, you'll install it directly from the APK. This requires a few extra steps on Android.

Download the APK

Tap the download button above. Your browser may warn you about APK files—this is normal for apps not from the Play Store.

Allow Installation

When you try to install, Android may ask you to allow your browser or file manager to install unknown apps. Tap Settings and enable "Allow from this source".

Install Stifle

Open the downloaded APK and tap Install. Google Play Protect may scan it first—this is normal.

Complete Onboarding

Open Stifle and follow the setup. You'll need to grant accessibility permissions for tracking.

Enabling Accessibility

Android 13+ has extra security for sideloaded apps. If you see "Restricted setting" when trying to enable accessibility:

Try to Enable Stifle First

Go to Settings → Accessibility → Stifle and try to enable it. You'll see a "Restricted setting" warning—this is expected. Dismiss this warning.

Open Stifle App Settings

Go to Settings → Apps → Stifle. The three-dot menu (⋮) in the top right will only appear after you've attempted step 1.

Allow Restricted Settings

Tap the menu (three dots ⋮) in the top right, then tap "Allow restricted settings". You may need to verify with your PIN or fingerprint.

Enable Accessibility

Now go back to Settings → Accessibility → Stifle and enable it. The toggle should work now.

Why is this needed?

Stifle uses accessibility services to detect when you lock your phone—that's how we track streaks. We never monitor what apps you use or what you type. Once Stifle is on the Play Store, this extra step won't be required.

Step 3: Disable Battery Optimization

For reliable streak tracking, you need to prevent Android from killing Stifle in the background.

Open App Settings

Long-press the Stifle app icon and tap App info, or go to Settings → Apps → Stifle

Find Battery Settings

Tap Battery (or "App battery usage")

Set to Unrestricted

Select Unrestricted (not "Optimized" or "Restricted")

Having Issues?

If streaks aren't tracking properly:

  • Make sure accessibility is enabled (Step 2)
  • Make sure battery optimization is disabled (Step 3)
  • Restart your phone after enabling accessibility
  • Check that you're connected to the internet
